This typically comes to pass when I, or any other manager, am subject to prolonged bouts of stress, leading to a complete drain of our physical, emotional, and mental energy.

It’s hardly surprising when you consider the demanding workloads, relentless hours, and high-stakes decision-making. When these conditions pair with an imbalance between work and personal life and a notable lack of support, it leads us to chronic stress and utter exhaustion.

However, I want to assure you that there are preventive measures that can help us tackle burnout before it takes root. Simple yet effective strategies like enhancing work-life balance, ensuring more support, and providing additional resources can help us managers reduce our stress levels and maintain our performance and overall health.

I urge you to take charge of your career and stave off manager burnout, starting with my Seven Steps outlined in this blog.

Here are 7 Solutions to Reducing Stress and Avoiding Manager Burnout

1. Set Realistic Goals and Boundaries:

By defining clear and achievable objectives, managers can focus their energy and efforts on tasks that truly matter, avoiding the feeling of being constantly overwhelmed. Effective goal-setting involves communication with their superiors to gain a clear understanding of expectations and timelines.

Engaging in open dialogue with their boss ensures alignment and clarity, enabling managers to allocate their time and resources appropriately. Managers establish a healthy work-life integration by setting boundaries, such as clearly defining working hours or delineating personal time.

Communicating these boundaries to both superiors and team members fosters understanding and respect, reducing the likelihood of excessive workload or constant availability expectations.

The practice of knowing and setting realistic goals and boundaries empowers managers to maintain a sense of control over their work and personal lives, promoting a healthier and more sustainable approach to their responsibilities.

As a former executive, I learned the invaluable skill of asking questions when it came to goals assigned by my boss. Instead of assuming I fully understood the objectives, I made it a habit to clarify and seek clarity through effective questioning.

By asking specific questions, I gained a deeper understanding of my boss’s goals, desired outcomes, and expectations. This practice ensured alignment and helped me communicate the goals more effectively to my team.

I have personally witnessed the powerful effect of writing down tasks on a piece of paper as a means of relaxation and regaining a sense of control. The act of externalizing thoughts and responsibilities by physically writing them down can have a calming effect on the mind.

It helps managers unload mental clutter and prevents the feeling of being overwhelmed. Seeing tasks and commitments laid out in a tangible form allows for better organization, prioritization, and planning, ultimately reducing stress and instilling a greater sense of control over one’s workload.

To prevent procrastination, forgetfulness, and the resulting feelings of rush and stress, I have developed a strategy to pull high-priority items off my to-do list and time block them on my calendar.

Go out to lunch! Don’t eat lunch at your desk or over the trash can in the break room. Go take a half hour to clear your mind and breath! All that work will be there when you get back. I promise you. Being more relaxed and stress-reduced will allow for a clearer mind and better mood, and you will work faster with better decisions.

Physical exercise, whether it’s a brisk walk around the building or other forms of movement, also plays a vital role in reducing stress and promoting overall well-being. By consciously making time for stress reduction activities and integrating them into their daily routines, managers can create a buffer against burnout. Aiming to solve problems at their root cause has been my guiding principle, as I believe it is a powerful approach that can significantly reduce burnout and stress. Approach the fires you face in a way that is fire prevention rather than extinguishing the fire. This overall will slowly reduce the distractions that often are self-forced errors.
